Put your career on the map: Nick Makoha, Hannah Lowe and Gemma Seltzer.
Arts Council England and Words of Colour Productions would like to invite you to:
Sustaining your career as a black and minority ethnic writer
Wednesday 7 October 2015
(6.30pm-8.30pm)
@Arts Council England
Places are free but limited to 30
Words of Colour Productions, in partnership with Arts Council England, is hosting a dynamic one-off free event for black and minority ethnic writers to help them understand the relevance of entrepreneurship and the available sources of financial support from Arts Council England and other funders. Arts Council England will focus on Grants for the Arts, Arts Council England’s National Lottery funded open access grant for individuals, arts organisations and other people who use the arts in their work.
Through presentations and a tailored Q&A session, this event aims to share information about funding, fundraising and how to sustain a creative career.
As recently highlighted in the Spread the Word report Writing the Future: Black and Asian Writers, Publishers and the UK Marketplace, there is a significant lack of diversity in the publishing industry. With many publishing houses spending less money on marketing to promote their writers, it is more important than ever for authors to seek funding and opportunities from other sources.
Digital platforms are opening up new avenues for writers, especially those who understand their brand, know how to crowdfund, how apply for funding, and work collaboratively with different artform practitioners.
Whether you are a black and minority ethnic poet, playwright, novelist or a digital author, this event is for you.
The event will include:
- Gemma Seltzer, relationship manager, literature at Arts Council England, outlining the support available from Arts Council England and other funders
- Inspiring guest presentations by established black and minority ethnic writers who have used funding to showcase their talents and work, including award-winning poet and playwright Nick Makoha and acclaimed poet Hannah Lowe
- Advice on brand development and digital entrepreneurship from Words of Colour Productions’ executive director Joy Francis
- Useful case studies
- Q&A session
- Refreshments and networking
Please note
We are prioritising individuals who have not received funding from Arts Council England in the past.
