In conversation with Courttia Newland

Black British writer Courttia Newland was this year described as one of the UK’s top 20 writers under 40 by The Observer newspaper. The award-nominated author, who in the spring published his acclaimed fourth novel, The Gospel According to Cane, first came to prominence in 1997 at the tender age of 23 with his debut The Scholar. An academic, playwright and broadcaster, Courttia talks to Joy Francis, executive director of Words of Colour Productions, about his career, mainstream publishing, how black characters are covered in fiction and the challenges facing Black British writers.
